A Fitness Tracking Mobile App

Flex Further

Challenge

strategy

FlexFurther is a family and friends health tracking app for both iOS and Android. Currently, there is no messaging feature within the product. The company would like to integrate this capability into the app.

On average, user engagement is heavy for the first three weeks. It then drops off. Soon after, users delete the app. The goal is to design new messaging features that create sustained engagement.

01

ENGAGEMENT

Create the opportunity for users to message each other with health and fitness goals/achievements.

02

REPEAT USAGE

Create an integrated messaging experience throughout the product.

Discovery

hypothesis:

Stats and achievements are displayed on the user’s home screen. However, there is no mechanism to alert other members/groups or message others as progress and goals are met.

If family and friends can message individuals or the entire group at any point throughout the experience, engagement and repeat usage will increase.

insight

01

Messaging and video calling provides the necessary encouragement for users to enthusiastically utilize the app.

02

Gamification is a huge motivational factor. Competitiveness will drive repeat usage.

03

Push Notifications help users to quickly acknowledge achievements and engage with other users.

04

Users appreciate design interaction that helps them successfully complete tasks.

reflection

FlexFurther endeavors to avoid the "out of sight, out of mind” user mentality. Users want to be a part of the process, but they also need prompts and reminders. The added features made engagement quick and frictionless. For example, a user may intend to congratulate another user when seeing their stats but forget to do so shortly thereafter. These integrated features allowed them to engage in-the-moment,

In the future, I would have liked to dive deeper into creating a Challenge aspect, similar to the feature in the Productive Habit Tracker app.
